The 1.6.x branch of PrestaShop is the latest version legacy branch of PrestaShop, first released as a stable version in March 2014.
It is constantly being improved upon. You can see it get better (and contribute to it!) has been superseded by the 1.7 branch with the release of version 1.7.0.0 in November of 2016.
It will still receive maintenance releases until June 2019.
